Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

The mediastinum is a separation between two lungs. It is divided into superior and inferior and anterior, middle and posterior. Your husband has a mass which is large and can be a part of anterior, middle or posterior mediastinum origin and that is the reason CT scan thorax is to be done. Para mediastinum means that the mass has borders which fuse with the mediastinal margins. Probable a lateral view radiograph will show accurately where the mass is located in the anterior posterior direction.

A mass measuring 14 x 3 cm is difficult to imagine without seeing the image. It might be arising from the lymphnodes or thymus or alone the vertebrae. It is not possible to proceed much without having a look at the image to understand the orientation of the mass. Please do not worry.

Hi I did review your concern mam.

Paramediastinal mass is generally either due to a lymphnode or lung problem.
It needs to be evaluated in terms of CT scan followed by an approach through thorax or transesophageal biopsy/ aspiration cytology to know the cause of this mass. the size of the mass is large indicative of either a lymphoma, germ cell tumor or it can be due to a chronic infection also.

I hope this helps.
wish you all the best.
